A Chatbot for Wildlife Sightings

WildIsrael is a non-profit organization that operates a public participation database for wildlife sightings. This project contributes to scientific knowledge, informs conservation planning, and promotes public engagement with wildlife.

The Problem

WildIsrael was interested in (1) reducing administrative workload and (2) improving contributors' engagement and sense of community.

The Solution

After conducting competitive analysis and user interviews, I designed a bespoke WhatsApp chatbot for wildlife sightings.

  • The chatbot yields data that is easier to work with, compared to reports in natural language. This can reduce administrator workload downstream.
  • The chatbot makes for a more conversational experience for the end user, compared to forms.
  • Additionally, reports can be automatically directed to a community discussion channel (which contributes to engagement), or kept private (which some users prefer).
